A Fabulous dinner!
Our first Hawker Center!!
It turned out to be a fairly miserable afternoon -- lots of rain -- so we stayed in and spent some time resting and catching up ... it has been a very active week! Our plan was to go out about 4, but it was still raining -- so delayed until 5. Still raining, so we delayed until 5:30, when it looked like things were clearing a bit. Down to the lobby where we caught a Grab for Lau Pa Sat Hawker Center, which is down in the old Colonial center of town.
Lau Pa Sat has been recommended by many Grab drivers we've encountered, as well as Jag, our tour guide from the other night, so we definitely wanted to try it. We got dropped off right in front of a very interesting building. While most Hawker Centers are open-air, Lau Pa Sat is under cover -- the original iron structure was shipped over from Scotland in the late 1800's and is still being used. It's really quite lovely, and accommodates many different vendors. It seems like everyone was provided for -- including Western-style BBQ!
We first found a table, and left our umbrellas to mark our places -- apparently that is hawker-center etiquette! Then we went looking for some tempura prawns. We didn't have far to go before Stall No. 13, where we each ordered Ebi Tempura Don, which came out very quickly. Basically, this was a bowl of rice, with a scrambled egg on top, with three wonderful, large prawns deep fried on top of that, with a great sauce. Oh my ... absolutely delicious!! I got a fresh lime ice to drink, and Debby had mango-peach. Pure delight, truthfully! Oh! And the Ebi Tempura Don was $7.00 SD per serving -- $5.45 US. For a glorious dinner! Incredible!! We also found some wonderful cookie dough with chocolate ice cream for dessert ... also yummy, but not nearly as remarkable as our prawns! Let's definitely hear it for Hawker Centers!!!!!
