Thursday Night Dinner
Dinner – Thursday (or whichever…) night
Honestly, my method of dealing with jetlag is to try not to. By that, I mean that when I get on an airplane, I reset my watch for destination time, and try never to look back. Robert is always calculating “what time it is at home…” but my philosophy is, I don’t care what time it is there (obviously, as I FaceTimed him at something like 2 am the other morning) but for me and my body, the only thing that counts is where I currently stand! So, that being the case, we were dragging by dinnertime yesterday.
Got back from the Museum around 3-ish, and I started blogging. As it took me a while to write about our “long day” … as well as figure out how to put photos into the blog itself and get it copied over, we were ready to go out looking for food about 5:30. As it turns out, Singapore is the town that never stops eating, so as opposed to Spain, for example, where one can’t get good food (unless it’s tapas) until 9 or 9:30 pm, the world was our oyster – well, literally and figuratively, as I really don’t like oysters. Debby’s friend’s business associate, Paul, had recommended some places for us to consider (always nice!) and as one of them – a major food court area, was just around the corner from our hotel, we went there. And Wow! I took a few photos of the place – lots of choices, and quite a mix of flavors!
While a Hawker Center is usually outdoors and divided into “family specialties” – this stall makes satay, this stall makes chicken rice, etc. the food courts are literally small restaurants everywhere of all kinds. We walked through and up several flights to just look around, and finally settled on Takasa, a Japanese place that had noodles (for Deb) and some beef that looked interesting for me.
As it turned out, my wagyu beef on a bowl of rice with a poached egg on top was delicious. Debby was less enthusiastic about her soba noodles with chicken, which she said was way too fatty to enjoy. Our starter, however, of three large tempuraed shrimp were stellar and definitely worth going back just for that!!
Who knew? Debby's very favorite place!
313 Somerset Mall
Lots of people and lots going on!
Huge digital screens everywhere!
Shrimp tempura appetizer - yummy!
Again, just sensory overload!

I spotted a real 7/11 along the way, and we stopped back there so that I, ever the water-consumer, could pick up some H2O, and discovered – surprise! – my all-time forever favorite dessert, a Magnum Classic ice cream bar – YAY! And then we found Debby an ice cream stand, where she picked up what she said was a delicious freshly made (from real vanilla!) ice cream cone, so we were both happy! We were also able to discover in the never-end bowels of the 313-Somerset mall, an ATM machine where we were at last able to get Singapore dollars!
From there it was back to the hotel, and definitely in for the night, about 8:30 pm. Up (for me at least) at 7 am although D still sleeping soundly. Big day today, as we hope to hit the Botanic Garden, do a walk in the Colonial Quarter as well as do the Night Safari tonight! So … until then, signing off!
Much love,
m
